Remember, these are brief outlines of my lectures and you are responsible for taking class notes, as questions will come from my discussion comments that give meaning to those points. During lectures I will discuss some background information you do not need for the exam, which means the other issues I discuss are fair game for the exam. Anatomy and Histology of the Small and Large Intestine MACROSCOPIC FEATURES Small Intestine The small intestine is a specialized tubular structure within the abdominal cavity in continuity with the stomach proximally and the colon distally. The small bowel increases 20 times in length with aging, from 200 cm in the newborn to almost 6 m in the adult, and its length is approximated by three times the length of the infant, or height of the child or adult. 1] The duodenum, the most proximal portion of the small intestine, begins at the duodenal bulb, travels in the retroperitoneal space around the head of the pancreas, and ends on its return to the peritoneal cavity at the ligament of Treitz. The remainder of the small intestine is suspended within the peritoneal cavity by a thin, broad-based mesentery that is attached to the posterior abdominal wall and allows free movement of the small intestine within the abdominal cavity. The proximal 40% of the mobile small intestine is the jejunum , and the remaining 60% is the ileum.The jejunum occupies the left upper portion of the abdomen, and the ileum is positioned in the right abdomen and upper part of the pelvis. No distinct anatomic demarcation exists between jeju-num and ileum. Visual examination of the luminal surface of the small intestine reveals mucosal folds, the plicae circulares. More numerous in the proximal jejunum, the plicae circulares decrease in number in the distal small bowel and are absent in the terminal ileum. Aggregates of lymphoid follicles are scattered throughout the small intestine but are found in highest concentration within the ileum, where they are designated Peyer's patches.Peyer's patches normally are more prominent during infancy and childhood than they are in adulthood. The small bowel is in continuity with the colon at the ileocecal valve, which comprises two semilunar lips that protrude into the cecum. The ileocecal valve provides a barrier to the retrograde flow of colonic contents i nto the small intestine. This barrier appears to be a function of the angulation between the ileum and cecum that is maintained by the superior and inferior ileoceal ligaments,[2] and a true tonic, sphincter-type pressure does not appear to be present in this region.Colon and Rectum The colon is a tubular structure approximately 30 to 40 cm in length at birth in the full-term infant. In the adult, the colon measures 1. 5 m, about one quarter of the length of the small bowel. The diameter of the colon is greatest in the cecum (7. 5 cm) and narrowest in the sigmoid (2. 5 cm). The colon is continuous with the small intestine proximally at the ileocecal valve and ends distally at the anal verge ( Fig. 93-1 ).The external appearance of the colon differs from that of the small bowel, because the longitudinal muscle fibers of the colon coalesce into three discrete bands called teniae, located at 120-degree intervals about the colonic circumference: tenia liberis, tenia omentalis, and tenia mesocolica. The teniae start at the base of the appendix and extend continuously to the proximal rectum. Outpouchings of the colon, the haustra, are found between the teniae. Semilunar folds characterize the mucosa between the haustra. Sacs of peritoneum filled with adipose tissue, the appendices epiploicae, are found on the surface of the colon.

On these occasions, people perform certain rites and thank God for the blessing that He bestows upon them. They gathers together at some place and offer prayers according to the teachings and dogmas of their religion. The rich give alms to the poor. Relatives, friends and neighbours pay specials visits to one another. They enjoy and rejoice in the same way and in the same manner. Thus such festivals bring all the members of society on one platform and remove all social indisciminations.Such festivals have also a psychological significance. We need some moments of rest after the day’s hectic activities. When routine work begins creating a sense of monotony and boredom in us, we desire to have some change in our life. This is necessary to purify us. So usually fairs are held on this occasion. People play different games. Picni c sports are thronged with people. Children celebrate the occasion with bangs and booms. Sometimes older people also join them. They dance and sing with the children. Dainty and delicious dishes are prepared at home. Sweets and cakes specially prepared for the occasion are sent to the near and dear ones.Houses are also decorated. So such festivals serve as an ‘overhaul’ of our mind, body and soul and bring about positive and constructive changes in our personality. Eid-ul-fitr is also such an occasion that is celebrated every year with full religious fervor. The Eid comes every year with the message of hope, love, equality and universal brotherhood. As it comes after the month of fasting, it has especial significance. It symbolizes man’s moral triumph over his animal instincts. The day begins with early rising, a bath, and wearing a new or at least the cleanest possible clothes and spraying perfume on oneself.It follows a donation of ‘fitrana’ to the deserving. Then every Muslim proceeds for prayers. There is considerable hustle and bustle in the prayer ground. To the gay colours of the children’s dresses are now added balloons and toys. â€Å"Khutba† follows the prayer. In this address the speaker throws light on the importance of fasting and the blessings of God that it brings. Rest of the day is spent in meeting friends and relatives and exchanging gifts with them. A part from the religious purpose, the occasion of Eid provides economic activity. There is a great shopping spree for ten days.Both the rich and the poor make purchases for the members of their families and especially for their children who also receive ‘Eidi’ form their elders on the Eid day. The shopkeepers reap a rich harvest of profits. With the approach of Ramazan and Eid prices shoot up. This trend must be checked. We must keep it in mind the spirit of such festivals. They are not meant for personal aggrandizement or personal gain s. The main purpose gains. The main purpose of these festivals is to bring hope and happiness in the life or those from whom fate has turned its face.

From Victors above words we can see that he is still motivated to seek revenge on the monster, despite the danger to his life. He also attempts to put the life of others in danger, as he asks Walton to murder the monster if he gets a chance:  If I do (die), swear to me, Walton, that (the monster) shall not escape; that you seek him, and satisfy my vengeance in his death.   (Volume 3, Chapter 7, p212) When Victor enters the novel, he is portrayed as a noble and kind person who is capable of both love and friendship. He has strong ambition and eager to learn. However, one gets the impression that when he starts to create life, he is trying to take the role of God, and becomes obsessed with gaining glory and power so much, that he forgets the importance of love and family. Victor also fails to care for the monster, which in my opinion is highly monstrous as it just like abandoning a new born baby. Furthermore, Victor acts selfishly in many occasions throughout the play. He decides to create a female companion for the monster, to stop the monster chasing him. But he goes against his promise when he thinks about what the world will think of him, if a race of monsters attacks the world. Everything Victor does is centred on himself and he only thinks about what benefit it would be to himself, when he considers an action. Now that I have considered Victor as a character, I will now examine the monster. The monster starts off his life as an innocent creature; however his abnormal figure and demented shape caused people to be scared of him and reject him. When the monster walked into an old mans home to obtain food and shelter, the old man:  -turned on hearing a noise; and, perceiving (the monster), shrieked loudly, and, quitting the hut, ran across the fields.  (Volume 2, Chapter 3, p108) All the man had to see was monsters figure to make him run away without any enquiry. This suggests that the creatures look posed a threat to everyone who saw him, and led to him being alienated from society.  However the monster is quite kind to start off with. While he was observing the De Lacy family, he demonstrates his kind gestures by gathering a great pile of wood for the De Lacy family to use as firewood. He also put their well being before his starvation, as he stopped stealing a part of their store for (his) own consumption when he found out that it inflicted pain on the cottagers. During the beginning period the monster spends with the De Lacy family, he perceives that the words they spoke sometimes produced pleasure or pain, smiles or sadness, in the minds and countenances of the hearers. He too wanted to be able to interact in this way and ardently desired to become acquainted with speech. This shows that the monster is eager to learn and wants to become just like other humans. Once the monster has mastered the use of speech, his desire to be like humans motivated him to enter the house of the De Lacy family, and speak to the blind old man when he was left alone at the cottage. This shows that the monster has some wit and cleverness as he selects a person who cant judge him by his figure, but his personality and speech. However, whilst he is talking to the blind old man, the rest of the De Lacy family return home and were shocked by the appearance of the monster to such an extent that Felix, a male member of the De Lacy family, beat the monster violently with a stick using supernatural force. It is this mistreatment of the monster that sparks a deadly hatred within himself for his creator. The monster had received abuse from the De Lacy family after he had helped them, all because of the way that Victor had made him look, and the fact that he had failed to protect him. It is this anger that makes the monster monstrous by personality and drives him to kill William (Victors younger brother):  Frankenstein! You belong then to my enemyto him towards whom I have sworn eternal revenge; you shall be my first victim.  (Volume 2, Chapter 8, p144) The monster also seems to be jealous of Victor, as he knows that he can never have love and relationship like him and other humans because of the way he looks. We know this because the monster frames Justine for murder of William, as he knew he could never possess anything as beautiful as her. And it is this feeling that brings the monster to demand Victor to make a creature of another sex, but as hideous as himself. From this, we can see all that the monster wants is a bit of love and companionship, to make him lead a life which is similar to humans. However Victor cheats the monster by first agreeing to create the female monster, but then tearing (her) to pieces in front the monster at the final stages of her production. This upsets the monster as Victor has effectively destroyed the monsters only chance of love in front of his eyes. This antagonism caused the monster to become monstrous once again, as he murders both Henry Clerval and Elizabeth (now Victors wife): -what I now held in my arms had ceased to be the Elizabeth whom I had loved and cherished. The murderous mark of the fiends grasp was on her neck, and the breath had ceased to issue from her lips. (Volume 3, Chapter 6, p199)  Despite this, the monster does illustrate some humane characteristics towards the end of the novel. There are two strategic objectives to control dengue by genetically modified mosquitoes.(McCall and Kittayapong 2006; Olson, Alphey et al. 2006) vector population suppression population replacement. In the population suppression vector number is reduced to minimize disease transmission and population replacement of wild-type vector was replaced with genetically modified vector incapable of transmitting the disease.(Antonelli, Clayton et al.) suppression techniques and replacement of population are not mutually exclusive and can be implemented in conjunction with other approaches. (Olson, Alphey et al. 2006; Organization 2009) For suppression of the vector population SIT (sterile insect technique) SIT is a specific control environment of the species method in which large numbers of sterile males are release these mate with wild female reduces the reproductive capacity of mosquito. (Coleman and Alphey 2004; Helinski, El-Sayed et al. 2006) SIT mosquito control approaches have been tense and still planned .Reduction mating competitiveness, and sterile female does not reduce the population ,fertility of irradiated males residual is the limitation of the approaches to mosquito control SIT. This species also appears to be reasonably uniform over large areas, without the problems of sub-species and barriers to mating. Some trials used sterilizing chemicals such as thiotepa, which was effective for sterilization, but led to trace contamination with this mutagenic chemical. Another problem for mosquito SIT relates to the biology of the mosquito population. Dorm Life Essay -- College Housing Relationships Essays

Dorm Life Each year students entering college face one of the biggest transitions they will ever have to encounter in there life, moving into a dorm room. Most students are use to living in a house with there family and most likely having there own bedroom and own bathroom. Now as they begin college, the students move in with complete strangers, and share a bedroom and maybe a bathroom with one to three other people. Adapting to this new environment might take a lot of time and patients for this college student to adjust and feel comfortable. Finally after adapting to this new life the college students begin to enjoy this new environment. In this paper I am going to talk about and explain some of the steps of this transition to dorm life and give some of my experiences. Just think about growing up and having your own bedroom that was twelve feet by eighteen feet, then all of a sudden you go off to college and you are sharing this same size bedroom with three other girls. Most people would feel very crammed and uneasy at first. This is exactly what happened to me. Even though I knew two out of three of my roommates it still felt uncanny. In our bedroom we had four beds that could not be bunked, a TV stand and TV, and we also had four night stands by each of our beds. Built in one wall of the bedroom were a mirror, sink, and some drawers. This dorm room also had a living room (which was the same size as the bedroom), where we each had our own little desk area for our computers and what not. The fourth roommate decided to bring her own desk even though she had another desk to use. This desk took up a lot of space that we did not have. We also had a futon, papazon chair, trunk, refrigerator, microwave, and storag... ... life is all the memories you get to make. The late night conversations with your roommates about life and your future goals are the best. Cheering up your roommate by doing something funny to make them laugh after a bad day of classes. Its always great to be cheered up by someone who has got to know you in a short period of time but has also got to see almost all side of you. Movie marathons on those rainy days with the roommates to pass the time always keep me out of the state of boredom. These are just a few things that students store in there dorm life memory box. College is not all about the studying, and classes, it is the life outside of classes, the dorm life. Dorm life is not all that bad once the college student gets use to the small room and having to share it with one to two other peers. Most likely the good times out weigh the bad by a lot.

Althought his play † twelfth night † is a romantic comedy while † Romeo & Juliet † is romatic tragedy , they both show that love can cause pain ; Many of the characters claim to suffer painfully from beying in love .. In the † twelfth night † we have more than one love story , Olivia describes love as a plague from which she suffers terribly ; Viola also seems unhappy † My state is desperate for my master’s love † ; Viola falls in love with Orsino but can not tell him , because he thinks she is a man , while Olivia , the object of Orsino’s affection , love Viola ‘ Cesario ‘ , Olivia wants to let Cesario know that she loves him by sending him a ring by way of Malvolio , it was her way of expressing her love . Love in this play is coming out of apure hearted people , who , loves for love . the characters in this play have a very deep sense of love , that they love each other spirtualy away from any phisical impact on their passion . The blind passion of love leads the lover to struggle against public and social institutions that either explicitly or implicitly oppose the existence of their love , the famelies of the lovers are enemies , which make their dream hard to come true Althought Romeo & Juliet is the most famous love story in english literary tradition , which end with a very tragedy ending when the couple sicide , theire suicides can be understood as the ultimate night , the ultimate privcy where thy don’t have to fac a new day and a new social struggle . From my own prespective i think love in the Twelfth night is strongr and deeper while in Romeo & Juliet we have eye love which is baced  on the physical appearance , what makes the story look so passionate is th impossibility of their marriage , As every body knows , human nature desired to struggle and face difficalties , such love will end as soon as they satisfy their desires , but love in the Twelfth night wont end easily because it was not easily given †¦ the emotions which can be easily given , they will disappear easily . These two plays are great to study and analyse , although they have different dramatic style of writing , but still have the same spirit that presents human emotions and feelings in agreat smooth way to understand .

Communicative Language Teaching

Q1) Write about your past formal or informal language learning experiences (any which is not your first language). Would you consider them to be effective or ineffective? Give reasons for your answer. A) I had just passed my 4th std and was on vacations to a remote village in Karnataka where my mother was posted as a headmistress for a government primary school. I had no plans of leaving my mother and returning with my father to belgaum and continue with my school . Nevertheless I was cajoled into coming back , that was in mid july , and by then it was a month and a half since my school had re-opened. I was in for a rude surprise as a language had been included into our curriculum. I came across a very terse looking gentleman who turned out to be our hindi teacher. My real troubles began when I was asked to give my introduction as I was a latecomer. My hindi teacher gave me an earful for not attending the previous classes and asked me to be very careful henceforth. The classes had begun quite early and I was way behind. My classmates had learnt the consonants and vowels by heart . I could not recognize a single alphabet, the script was alien to me, it was in devanagari . I was in tears and very miserable as I was punished for not being able to answer anything nor read from the text book. The next few days went by and then one fine morning my hindi teacher condescended to help me in grasping the new language. He sat by me on my bench and taught me the hindi alphabets one by one . I felt encouraged and started taking interest and slowly and gradually I learnt to read and write. We were given words with their English meaning which were to be memorized by us. This memorization turned out to be a building block in my endeavour of acquiring vocabulary and fluency in the language. I went on to score the highest in the class. I participated in debates, wrote essays ,memorized the dohas and their summaries, so on and so forth and went on scoring high for the rest of my school days. I became his favourite pupil and gained my self respect as well. And the person who made it all possible was my hindi teacher who was very sincere, dedicated and devoted towards his profession and his pupils . He was sensitive to every student’s needs and used very innovative methods. He was always at hand to clear any doubt, explain anything or answer any question. He made us feel very comfortable but was very strict about the home assignments . He made the lessons interesting by his way of teaching. And I think his methods were very effective in helping us all to learn a new language. Interaction, Motivation and encouragement are the key words ,which I think and believe benefit every student in the process of learning a new language. The old school method of drilling and memorizing also does help in acquiring a vocabulary and learning grammar helps us frame sentences accurately. Q2) Why do you think the CLT has gained popularity in the language classroom? A. The CLT is a more generally accepted approach today owing to a wide variety of interpretations and classroom applications. The approach highlights distinct communicatve traits and incorporates authentic, real world simulations and meaningful tasks. B. Communicative Language Teaching can be defined as a unified yet broadly based , theoretically well informed set of doctrines about nature of language learning and teaching. C. Communicative Language Teaching highlights the social, cultural and pragmatic features of languages. It uses authentic language to a great extent in an attempt to build fluency. D. The basic characteristics of the communicative mode of teaching feature distinct digression from the previous approaches. E. In Communicative Language Teaching, the grammatical, functional, socio-linguistic and strategic discourse components are at their best possible interplay. The techniques are utilitarian and driven towards fulfillment of individual purposes. F. Fluency and accuracy are complementary principles that alternatively acquire high degree of importance. G. Productive and contextualized communication is necessarily the goal and the students need to towards this goal through the development of appropriate strategies for autonomous learning. The teacher here is the facilitator who is supposed to facilitate authentic linguistic interaction and encourage meaningful construction of language. H. The functional aspects like fluency and spontaneity displace overt presentation and discussion of grammatical rules and concentrate on the learner’s initiative in CLT. Hence ,the communicative approach stresses the importance of language functions( such as, agreeing, inviting , suggesting etc)as opposed to reliance only on grammar vocabulary. This approach also suggests that if students have enough exposure to the language and the opportunity to use it then language learning would in effect , take care of itself. Activities in CLT typically require students to use the language in real life situations, so role-play and simulation have become popular with this method. CLT places far more emphasis on completion of the task then the accuracy of the language

Jane Austen’s use of Gothic Traditions in Northanger Abbey Essay

The term ‘Gothic’ was first really used by Italian writers who ‘accredited’ what they thought was the ugliness of the art and architecture of the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. They often related this art and architecture to the northern tribes of German Barbarians known as the ‘Goths’; these were the first to corrupt the style of the grand architecture back. They would make towers that were too tall, walls that were too thick and arches that were too steeply pointed – thus destroying the architecture of the generation. By adding such grotesque and mysterious objects such as gargoyles, the Italian writers seemed as though they were just adding insult to injury. They were horrified. But just as ‘Gothic’ was at its peak around the mid-fourteenth century, it seemed to decline slowly and make its way into a history book, never to be seen again. But by the late eighteenth century, the Gothic revival was back in business, and more popular than ever before! The Gothic revival was first started by a man named Horace Walpole (1717-1797), as a reaction against the Classicism of the previous era. Horace was a writer who transformed his simple home into the most Gothic building of its age. It had pillars, vaults, arches, and a great tower. This signalled the beginning of a new cultural era. Walpole’s Gothic house was inspired by a dream, which he could only describe as † I had thought myself in an ancient castle†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Inspired by his vision, Walpole sat down and produced ‘The Castle of Otranto’, the world’s first Gothic novel and named one of the most influential novels in the history of English literature. In response to this, there were of course many other Gothic novels to be published, among these, was the very popular ‘The Mysteries of Udolpho’ by Ann Radcliffe. Gothic novels between 1790 and 1830 fell within the category of romantic literature, and you could say it was a rebellion against the formality and rigidity of how other kinds of literature were written at that time. Ever since ‘The Castle of Otranto’, many Gothic novels have followed the similar pattern: the terrifying old castle on the hill or the misty graveyard. The setting is always greatly influential in Gothic novels. It not only evokes the atmosphere of horror and trepidation, but it also portrays the dramatic deterioration of what used to be a beautiful piece of architecture. At one time the abbey, castle or mansion was something treasured and appreciated, but now it is just a mere shadow of its former self. As for traditional Gothic characters, there is always a hero, usually a female, who has no idea of how to deal with the situations put towards her, and you are always able to see a pattern in their characterisation. There is almost always an isolated protagonist, and their part in the story is mainly summarised nearing the dramatic end of the story. Then, there is the villain, who is the epitome of evil. This character could be anyone you could think of; mad scientist, inn keeper, or baron of the manor house. The Gothic novel could be seen as a description of a fallen world and we experience this world through all aspects of the novel: plot, setting, characters and theme. In order for a novel to be Gothic, it must be accurate to Gothic traditions, impeccable language, possibly of old chapters in history. But with great novels come great sceptics; Jane Austen was not altogether pleased with this new genre of writing. She did not regard Gothic novels as ‘proper literature’. She criticised the readers of the novels (mainly young teenage girls). Jane Austen went about her earlier criticisms of Gothic novels to little avail; people still enjoyed reading them and by 1798, Gothic novels were at their peak in fashion although it was never taken seriously as literature. Jane Austen knew she had to do something drastic to proclaim her annoyance of this new genre; so she wrote a parody, Northanger Abbey. Yet the characteristics shown in Chapter 1 do not suggest that Catherine Morland was a Gothic Heroine at all! Catherine Morland is the heroine of the book. She is described as having â€Å"a thin awkward figure, a sallow skin without colour, dark lank hair, and strong features–† and that â€Å"and not less unpropitious for heroism seemed her mind†. Her behaviour was equally inept: â€Å"She was fond of all boy’s plays, and greatly preferred cricket not merely to dolls, but to the more heroic enjoyments of infancy, nursing a dormouse, feeding a canary-bird, or watering a rosebush†. Jane Austen employs great irony to describe her, satirising â€Å"her abilities† as â€Å"quite as extraordinary†. Austen ends with the comment â€Å"She never could learn or understand anything before she was taught; and sometimes not even then, for she was often inattentive, and occasionally stupid†. By Chapter 5, Catherine is taken to Bath by some wealthy godparents for her first experience of high society, attending various balls and parties. Catherine meets Isabella Thorpe, an attractive, flirtatious young lady, who introduces her to Gothic novels, such as the ‘Castle of Otranto’ and Catherine is ‘enchanted’ by them. But most of the Gothic moments happen during Catherine’s visit to the Abbey itself. For example, in Chapter 21, during the day, Catherine notices a large chest, standing at one side of the fireplace in her bedroom: ‘The sight of it made her start; and, forgetting everything else, she stood gazing on it in motionless wonder, while these thoughts crossed her’. In classic gothic style, Catherine questions herself: ‘An immense heavy chest! What could it hold? Why should it be placed here?’ This is an example of Austen’s Gothic parodying of the gothic characters and literary style it is, aimed to mock the traditional Gothic heroines who followed this curiosity, usually a feature in all Gothic novels. But it also mocks the way the novels are written. Panting punctuation, excessive exclamation marks and ridiculous hyperbolic adjectives. We see an example of her gothic language when she speaks to herself (concerning the chest): â€Å"I will look into it; cost me what it may, I will look into it, and directly too—-by daylight†. We cannot deny that Catherine is somewhat ‘over-doing it’ with the ridiculous questions â€Å"What could it hold? Why should it be placed here?†. The Chest is described with ridiculous accuracy: â€Å"The lock was silver, though tarnished from age; at each end were the imperfect remains of handles also of silver, broken perhaps prematurely by some strange violence; and, on the centre of the lid, was a mysterious cipher, in the same metal†. This over-descriptive language creates a tense gothic-style passage yet in a way, is ‘too gothic’. By doing this, Austen succeeds in making a ‘spoof’ as it were, of gothic novels written previous to this novel. Catherine decides to investigate, by opening the chest: â€Å"and seized, with trembling hands, the grasp of the lock† and â€Å"she raised the lid a few inches; but at that moment a sudden knocking at the door†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This is when the maid enters; this build-up of tension, and sudden interruption is very anticlimactic, and we see this not only once in Northanger Abbey. When Catherine dismisses the maid, she goes at the chest once more, only to find that it contains white linen! Once again, an anticlimax, which leaves Catherine very surprised (and embarrassed, when Miss Tilney enters shortly afterwards). Later on in this Chapter, Catherine comes to discover a Japan Cabinet: â€Å"She took her candle and look closely at the cabinet. It was not absolutely ebony and gold; but it was Japan†. Catherine (like any other Gothic heroine) is intrigued by this new discovery, and decides to open it, hoping the contents would be more exciting than them of the chest. Thr sequence of events happen by night, giving the cabinet an almost mysterious awe about it, which would only add to the tone of the passage. Austen uses words like â€Å"mysteriously†, â€Å"the wind roared† and â€Å"the rain beat down in torrents against the windows† to give the scene an even more gothic-like tone. Catherine finds that however hard she turns the key on the cabinet, however she manages to open it â€Å"the door suddenly yielded to her hand: her heart leaped with exultation at such a victory† revealing a series of lesser bolts and doors within the cabinet. Catherine’s curiosity would not stop there. She decided to delve further into the cabinet of mystery! A lot of the text on the page is devoted to the examination of this cabinet. â€Å"With less alarm and greater eagerness she seized a second, a third, a fourth–each was equally empty†: this was describing the many smaller drawers within the Japan Cabinet, all with seemingly obvious, predictable outcomes – they contained nothing. The tension has become somewhat lost however in one of the other drawers Catherine finds a parchment: â€Å"her eyes directly fell on a roll of paper pushed back into the further part of the cavity†. There is an air of tension, as Catherine reaches out to unveil what the manuscript beholds. But suddenly (dramatic tension), â€Å"The dimness of the light her candle emitted made her turn to it with alarm; but there was no danger of its sudden extinction† – the candle was flickering yet she did not think it would go out. However the flame did go out: â€Å"Alas! it was snuffed and extinguished in one†. Catherine was now submerged into complete darkness (very much gothic; darkness and candles becoming suddenly snuffed out). Austen uses words like â€Å"horror† and â€Å"trembled† to create an atmosphere of terror and uncertainty. As Catherine stood â€Å"motionless with horror† she thought she could hear â€Å"receding footsteps†. This usage of noises in a perfectly still, quiet and dark atmosphere is used to scare not just Catherine but the reader also. â€Å"A cold sweat stood on her forehead, the manuscript fell from her hand† and she hastily jumped back into bed. This is very anticlimactic, and very unlike a gothic heroine to come running back to a place of safety. One would expect a gothic heroine to relight the candle and look at the parchment nevertheless. However, that is not the case in this instance. A sense of tension is still apparent in the text when Catherine can still hear the slow ‘ticking’ of the clocks in a silent atmosphere – this is bound to be unnerving for Catherine. The weather is still apparent, keeping the tone a tense and restless one: â€Å"The storm still raged, and various were the noises, more terrific than the wind, which struck at intervals on her startled ear†. Austen also uses â€Å"Hollow murmurs seemed to creep along the gallery† to keep the tension on tenterhooks. However, the sheer fact that Catherine falls asleep destroys the atmosphere and tension completely, as we turn to a completely new chapter. Jane Austen’s uses of Gothic traditions are very apparent in this text: she describes the room and the Cabinet so vividly. She adds the traditional gothic tone, the pathetic fallacy, the weather, at night, the rain, and the storm, † The night was stormy; the wind had been rising at intervals the whole afternoon: and by the time the party broke up, it blew and rained violently† all Gothic traditions yet Catherine running back to her bed scared left on a gothic cliff hanger of suspense, however when Catherine ran back to her bed it was totally anticlimactic. In the morning (and the opening of Chapter twenty-two), the scene is completely different. Sun is pouring through the windows and birds are singing. Catherine discovers the precious lists are only laundry bills, â€Å"‘To poultice chestnut mare,’ a farrier’s bill!†: this is very anticlimactic. But this is why Northanger Abbey is a parody, continually acting against what Gothic novels are based around and may contain. Later in chapter twenty-two, Catherine is talking to Eleanor about the death of her mother, and her father’s relationship with her mother. Many of these questions were very rude and personal. As the conversation led on, Catherine drew new conclusions about Mrs Tilney’s death: that General Tilney had murdered his wife and was hiding her away secretly somewhere in the Abbey. This is another example of Catherine’s strange and vivid imagination. â€Å"Was she a very charming woman? Was she handsome? Was there any picture of her in the abbey? And why had she been so partial to that grove? Was it from dejection of spirits?†. These were some of the questions Catherine was asking herself. This is very insensitive, whilst talking on such a delicate matter as a family member. This is unlike a gothic heroine to ask so many questions. The two come onto the subject of a portrait of Mrs Tilney, and how General Tilney most not have valued her, â€Å"A portrait, very like, of a departed wife, not valued by her husband† and that because of this microcosm, â€Å"He must have been dreadfully cruel to her†. Catherine relates these misunderstanding to those of characters she had read in other gothic novels previous to her visit to the abbey: â€Å"She had often read of such characters; characters, which Mr. Allen had been used to call unnatural and overdrawn† . Right now Catherine is mixing fact with fiction, and lets her imagination run wild with vivid ideas of how General Tilney is an evil baron of some sort. Catherine often hears the slightest microcosm, yet turns it into a macrocosm, and lets these new ideas go to her head, and we see this is exactly the case in Chapter 24. Jane Austen’s use of questions and thoughts in Catherine’s head gives us an insight into how the mind of a gothic heroine works, however Catherine has been too taken in by other novels that she actually dreams of becoming a gothic heroine and wants to have a passion for danger (thus the investigations at nightfall in chapter 21 and yearning for answers to the ‘mystery’ which never was). Yet her profile (in Chapter 1) tells us otherwise; it mentions she is nothing at all like a gothic heroine! This new wild passion for mystery and conspiracy led Catherine to enter Mrs Tilney’s room in chapter twenty-four, just when General Tilney was out on a walk: â€Å"The general’s early walk, ill-timed as it was in every other view, was favourable here; and when she knew him to be out of the house, she directly proposed to Miss Tilney the accomplishment of her promise. Eleanor was ready to oblige her; and Catherine reminding her as they went of another promise, their first visit in consequence was to the portrait in her bed-chamber† When she ventures in â€Å"On tiptoe she entered† she notices that the room is entirely normal: â€Å"She could not be mistaken as to the room; but how grossly mistaken in everything else!–in Miss Tilney’s meaning, in her own calculation!†, Catherine expected to enter a room full of mysterious torture instruments and dungeon-like atmosphere. Instead, there was normal furniture, paintings and various other decorations: â€Å"She saw a large, well-proportioned apartment, an handsome dimity bed, arranged as unoccupied with an housemaid’s care, a bright Bath stove, mahogany wardrobes, and neatly painted chairs, on which the warm beams of a western sun gaily poured through two sash windows† – yet again we see the over descriptive language which is ever present in the novel. This is an anticlimax and not Gothic because Catherine was expecting something very different. Northanger Abbey is the epitome of Gothic Spoof. Jane Austen succeeds in mocking what Gothic novels are all about, the content and the way the characters act, as well as the young teenage girls who read them. The description of places and objects is amusingly hyperbolic, and excellent as a parody of a gothic novel. It has to be, because the trend of Gothic novels is to have deep descriptions, and Austen is able to utilize the gothic traditions and add to them somewhat ridiculously! Austen makes good use of the characters i.e. Catherine, and you are able to see what they do and what they think. Austen is good at writing in a gothic style – she builds up tension and pulls us in, only to let there be an anticlimax and let us down. She makes good use of Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Uldopho and the way she entwined some of the ideas from that book to this novel.
